Our History

As the founder of our company Griffith E. Harris, Sr. established a philosophy of "Personal Service With Integrity" that endures to this day.

Our Founder, Griffith E. Harris, Sr.

Griff Sr. was born in 1921 and grew up in Cos Cob, eventually serving Greenwich as its First Selectman. Like his father, Samuel Harris, Griff Sr. was an integral part of the Greenwich community. Even as a young man, he won awards and recognition for his community service. After his graduation from Greenwich High School, Griff Sr. served in the military during WWII, and met his future wife while stationed abroad in England. The young couple married and returned to Greenwich to start their family.

Founding Griffith E. Harris Insurance

Following again in his father’s footsteps, Griff Sr. chose a career in insurance. At the age of 25, he founded Griffith E. Harris Insurance in 1946 in Cob Cob.

Ongoing Dedication to Community Service

The Harris family has served the Greenwich Community for over 65 years. Throughout his life, Griff Sr. remained active with many local charities, including The Lions Club, The Elks Club, and The Mary Fund. He also served as President of the “100 Club” of Connecticut, an organization that benefits the families of fallen State Troopers.

First Selectman of Greenwich

Griff Sr. again served the town as First Selectman, for three terms from 1956-62. In this role, he led efforts in many significant projects, including Senior Housing, Cos Cob Marina, and our Public Golf Course—now named “The Griffith E. Harris Golf Course,” affectionately referred to as “The Griff.”
